Modern Quilt Interruption and More Dot's Block

I am taking a Modern Quilt Interruption from Mine and Kevin's MQS quilt.  Well, actually this Modern one, hopefully, will be done in time to go to MQS also, but we'll see.

I fell in love with a quilt designed by my friend Jamie Mueller, visit her blog at  Sunflower Seeds or her website at Sunflower Quilts to see some of her amazing quilts and buy her patterns.  The quilt was originally named "Master Carpenter's Square".  Because I wanted to make a miniature, and if you know me, you know I never follow directions, I changed the quilt somewhat..... and now I'm making my quilt "Jamie's Carpenter Squared".

The original pattern was made with Charm Squares (5").  Miniaturized would have been 6.5" x 6.5", way too small  for me.  Sooooo, I added lots of rows, and rows, and rows.  It is now 48 rows by 48 rows, and will measure 24"x24", Although I am throwing in some larger solid pieces for negative space. Or at least that's the plan!
2 of the sections I have done!
Yep, those are 1/2" squares....

More Dot Blocks

I may be getting the hang of this blog stuff, well at least I didn't wait a month to post again!  The New Year's over and I've begun to "demantle" Christmas in the evening.  Day hours I am working dillegently in the studio, trying to get my quilts done for MQS.  Jumping back and forth between quilting one and piecing another has made these cold days fly past.  Unfortunately the weather has caused Guild meetings to be cancelled and I miss my quilty friends!  Saturday is the St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild and I am going!  The weather should be OK so look out fellow quilters here I come.

The next couple of blocks from Dot's quilt follow.  It's kind of fun, going back and looking at these blocks. Really helps get my creative juices flowing.  I had forgotten that the recurring items in blocks are feathers, "l"s, and leaves.

Happy New Year!

Just like everyone else, I will start with my obvious New Year's resolution.... Post on my blog every week.. or at least make the attempt to!  My second resolution is to take pics of people texting and driving and post on FB, (as a passenger!) Yep, pet peeve.

Since I am currently quilting my entry for MQS in Wichita, I have no pics of works in progress to post.  I've never posted pics of competition quilts before hand, superstitious I guess.  And I have sworn my co-hort, Kevin (KevinTheQuilter) to secrecy also! But I can say WOW! he did an amazing job designing/piecing and now it is my turn in this fun and challenging quilting adventure.

I have, therefor, decided to post about some quilts I have done in the past and the process I went thru to create the quilting designs.  The first quilt is by a customer, Dot, who HAND-PIECED a star quilt.  Every star block is different, so I decided to quilt every block different.  I took pictures thru out the designing/quilting, mostly for myself, but also to share with other quilters.  My design process -  I lay my clear plastic sheet over the block and using a dry erase pen, draw out different designs until I find one I like.  Then quilt it.  I took lots of pics so I wouldn't have any repeats.  If I used a ruler, I included it in the pic.

I started by designing the motif for the inset triangle star blocks.

Well, I hope you liked the first 3 blocks, there are many more, 20 I think!  Please check back in a few days for some more block ideas.  Leave a comment and let me know if you like (or not) my blocks and/or design process.

Happy Quilting!

Lovin' this Modern Quilting...

I can't believe how long it's been since I last blogged, so much for my intention to keep up with this.  So much has been happening this fall.  "All My Rowdy Friends" went to Houston and will soon be on it's way to Phoenix. Teaser Alert---Kevin has given me our collaboration to quilt,  it's AMAZING!!!! I just want to start quilting it, but I have some Christmas presents left to make first.  I also decided to do Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice mystery quilt.  I know I won't be able to keep up with it totally, but if I get a little of each step done, I should eventually get it all done.  Key word - eventually, lol. Luckily I have a couple friends trying their best to keep me on track.

This past weekend I had the honor of teaching  longarm quilting classes at Hunter Heirloom Quilting outside Warrensburg, in Centerview, MO.  The owners, Amy & Joe, some of the nicest people you'ld want to meet, are also Innova Dealers.  The shop is spacious, warm, inviting with, best of all, a great fabric selection!  I found some that I had not seen elsewhere that I HAD to have!  Even my hubby, Bob, picked some out for me.  I can't wait to go back, hopefully I will be teaching some more classes for them next year.  My students were so much fun, braving the freezing rain and ice.  But weather is not going to keep a good quilter in!! A great shop, well worth the trip.

My Modern Quilting adventure continues.....

This is another quilt by Elise, one of my favorite customers.  Elise has a great eye for color and gives me free reign on the quilting.  Where ever my little heart leads me.  After hanging it on my quilt rack, "talking" to me for awhile, I was ready to start.  (I always have the next quilt in view, waiting for inspiration to attack me)

Loaded up the quilt, laid on the Quilter's View Film, and started to draw ideas.

 Ideas for the Borders:

        Ugh...
        Ho Hum....
        Yes! Perfect!

So, time to start quilting.  Lots of ruler work, one of my favorites.  Slightly different than the original plan, but I like the design.  I like the contrast of the horizontal lines better than the vertical.

And then on to the Carpenter's block.  Quilter's View Film and start drawing.  I like the contrast of pebbles and the cross-hatching with the orange peel HST.  The center star mimics the border design.

Finished!

On to the negative space.  I used the same star design from the border in the center of this block.  Only with curved lines.

Finished!

Those pesky inset triangles.  What to do? What to do?

Yep, liked this.

TaDa!!!  Finished!

Well, I hope you all enjoyed my quilting process as much as I did.  This was a fun quilt to do.  AND, Elise just brought me 2 more quilts.  Come back and see what I do with them!
